Beth, Hi! Our district does encourage teachers to use technology and I think that overall they are supportive. I should know what a AUP is but I don't. What is an AUP? I would like to investigate where our district is going in the area of technolo...

Your job title and assignment
I am a social studies teacher at an alternative high school (VALTS) in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. ESU#13 serves the entire western Panhandle of Nebraska which covers approximately 15,000 square miles. VALTS is not a practical solution for students who live outside of Scotts Bluff county. That is why the Nebraska Educational Virtual Academy was created. I am one of four teachers who has designed courses in the four core areas.

All About You
I am entering my 5th year of teaching. I love technology and I am working on my M.Ed. in Secondary Curriculum and Instruction with a specialization in Technology from Chadron State College. I hope to finish the program next summer.

I credit my PLN (professional learning network) for showing me how to incorporate technology into my classroom. My goal is to prepare my students for life in the 21st century. I could not do this without the expertise of the amazing people in my PLN.

I have been married for 15 years and we have two girls. My oldest daughter is 14 and my "baby" is nearly 5. We have two great dogs and a somewhat worthless cat. ;-) Autumn is my favorite time of the year. I love sipping hot apple cider while driving around looking at the beautiful fall colors!

I attended a 21st century technology workshop in Norfolk with TOny Vincent - fantastic. I think that is where I heard of PBworks. The students have to be older than mine are if I remember right, however, I could use that one as a classroom blog for notes - or could they get to it from home if they needed to? I am looking for the easiest one to use with the safest access for my students.

I follow rmbyrneRT on twitter and checked out his post today rmbyrneRT @bethstill: about newbie. I noticed you were a part of Nebraska Educators Network and since I am a Nebraska Educator followed that link.

I am wanting to start blogging and using wikis in my fifth grade classroom so am exploring how to set it up safely and efficiently to enable the most learning. I have a SMART board also that I am always looking for more ways to use its potential.

Hi Beth
Thanks for the message. I do not have a ning at this point but I do run a moodle class that is part photo part video and part html editing as well as my blog that your student might like to look at.

The moodle I run with my multimedia class, right now we are not very active so your student could sign in as a guest and see everything we see. The moodle is at www. esu13.org and is under Sidney Public Schools/multimedia I.
My blog address i http://darlingphotoblog.blogspot.com I have my students personal blogs listed on that as well plus lots of web 2.0 tools to try.

And if she hasn't found it yet I would highly recommend Digital Photograpy School it is a fabulous learning resource! Lots of my resources from the moodle class are links back to this blog.

Have a happy Thanksgiving!

Good morning,
I have switched, too. I actually use my old test as reviews. The frustrating part was the activity was simple, but they had to have read the material. Which means that the grumblers didn't. The students had to create their own vocabulary puzzles using Puzzle Maker from Discovery Education.

You are correct though, when we ask them to approach an idea differently it makes their hamsters work. [Code word in my class for thinking / brain]

Hi Beth!

Yes, you may have seen me online or at NECC or NETA also. I am glad to see your enthusiasm for edtech. 21st century skills are so important so it's good to see there are advocates like you out there!

Google has some great tools for educators. I think just starting with http://www.google.com/educators is a good jumping point.

Good luck on your journey,
Jason

Yes Beth, I teach maths and science to 13-14 year olds (class of about 24); science and an off-campus program to year 9's (15-16 years) and VCE Environmental Science to students in their last two years of school. I also have two children and have been teaching 7 years.
Tell me, how is your school 'alternative'? Do you still offer the state curriculum and certifications?

ISTE Newbie Project

In June of 2008 I traveled to San Antonio, Texas to attend the National Education Computing Conference (NECC). Don't let the name fool you; NECC is not just for computer geeks. It is an annual conference, which will be called ISTE from now on, to reflect the growing global audience that attends. It truly is an international conference drawing well over 15,000 educators from around the world. My love for technology drew me to the… Continue
